The
Philosophy of the Week is a custom that is unique to the Harmony
by Karate program. Based on the ancient Japanese traditions of philosophical
dialogues between students and teachers. It was originally introduced
to the dojo by Sensei John in 1994, Each week since then, Sensei
John has offered his students an idea in the form of a simple quote
or phrase. Students are expected to consider this idea and to be
prepared to discuss their own ideas in class, both with Sensei,
and with other students.
These
discussions help create an attitude in the dojo of learning, personal
growth, mutual respect, understanding, and tolerance of the views
and ideas of others. This attitude distinguishes the Harmony By
Karate dojo from many others. Sensei John uses Philosophy of the
Week is a powerful tool to lead people out of their everyday frame
of mind, giving the students a chance to reflect honestly about
themselves, their environment, and their impact on the world around
them. With this in mind, Sensei creates his philosophies to help
students take a negative element from the past and turn it into
a positive element for the future. He believes strongly that reversing
negative thoughts and attitudes changes behavior, which, in turn,
changes society.
