Two 23-year- old women from Orange
Farm informal settlement in the Vaal have proved that hard work
and dedication do pay.
They
won scholarships to study Harmony by Karate in New York in the US.
Harmony by Karate is a course that focuses on a holistic caring
model for vulnerable children in South African townships.
The course starts in April and finishes
in August. Sylvia Selelekela, who grew up in an orphanage, completed
her matric five years ago but did not proceed with her tertiary
education because of lack of finance.
Duma Chaane said she sees this opportunity as a stepping stone to
pursue her career in working with children.
The
scholarship is sponsored by MaAfrika Tikkun, a non-profit organisation
that caters for vulnerable children
